Mechanical Keyboards
What is a mechanical Keyboard?
Mechanical keyboards are computer keyboards that have mechanical switches under each key, compared to the more common rubber membrane keyboards. These keyboards are built with higher quality, typically spring-activated, key switches. These switches vary based on the keyboard’s application or user preference. Varying from the customer the keyboard can, therefore, be adjusted in terms of typing experience, sound, and design depending on the parts the keyboard is made of.
why should i buy an expensive keyboard?
People have started to use keyboards more frequently than ever before; everyone is looking for new and more comfortable devices like headphones while neglecting one of the most used devices in the world, the keyboard. Wanting the newest smartphone or computer is common since it provides more comfort and or a performance increase, but keyboards are not seen in this way. If someone would like an individual high quality suit, they would rather visit a tailor then getting something massproduced and might not fit properly. Like a tattoo is every piece indivudual and unique. The same goes for a individual keyboard.
Then for me the question is not whether one should buy an expensive keyboard; the question is if it’s worth it for you, individually, to invest in a device you use on a regular basis and improve your everyday computer experience while having the features of a high quality product.
Improving sound, comfort, ergonomics, livespan, quality, looks or individuality are the main reasons why I joined the keyboard enthusiast community and embraced it ever since.
Here I wrote a short article about keyboard parts and how they can be costumized.
How Much Does A Custom Mechanical Keyboard Cost?
The pricing of mechanical keyboards can differ greatly. Store-bought mechanical keyboards are, more often than not, inferior in quality since they are produced in quantity. Therefore, specific care and custom builds have proven to provide a superior typing experience and better appearance.
A custom build, depending on the parts, can start from 200€ to over 1000€. The market changes and, therefore, pricing can, too.
